If we can use an emerging standard instead of our own bespoke implementation we should do so. It would be good to get some opinions on the viability and usability of the Xml patching standard.

I don't think XML Patch is well known since it is only a proposed standard. It may never go beyond that stage. I found only one open source implementation. That implementation only performs the patch operation; it does not perform diff. On the other hand, HTTP PATCH is being widely publicized, and there is now a proposed JSON PATCH standard, very similar to the XML version. In fact, they invented something called JSON Pointer, which works much like XPATH.

Still we can share what appears to be a reasonable syntax for updates with the RFC, even if it is not widely adopted.

Don - you may also want to look at the XQuery update syntax extensions. I have used them successfully and XQuery is widely supported. Reading the RFC, it looks like similar concepts are used - especially the notion of being able to add "before", "after'. Interesting that the RFC also has a "prepend".
