Sorry for the late response. My hack is working fine for the moment. In the long term I will need a more permanent solution, but right now it's working, and other parts of my application have been demanding my attention.
When I have a little more time, I'd be happy to formalize my hack, and submit a pull request.
node-email-templates is working well though. I'm very happy with it.
