Just a slight note, you don't need to modify .babel.rc. Just use any NODE_ENV different from development.

All I had to do was:

"test-integration": "export NODE_ENV=testing && wdio",
"test-unit": "export NODE_ENV=testing && ./node_modules/.bin/karma start"

If you keep bumping into this problem I suggest migrating React Hot Loader 3 which doesn’t have this crazy configuration overhead. It was built from the ground up with lessons learned both from React Hot Loader and React Transform. The docs are not there yet but this is a good start: gaearon/react-hot-boilerplate#61. Cheers!
