Are they planning to support newer R versions?
Otherwise I only see two options: using Ubuntu 16.04 for those processes or using a custom build of R. I don't like the second option unless there is an official set of old R packages that can be installed on latest Ubuntu versions.

I'm not sure, updates on their website seem to be regular though. The official documentation says that bioconductor works with R 3.4.3, which comes as a system package on Ubuntu 18.04 but bioconductor installation finished with errors. Using older Ubuntu base images may be tricky because we need other tools in the same custom Docker image to make them available to our processes.
