May want to also think about adding a select function that deals with the returning of the object. That keeps this cleaner and just returns info in the data slot, Select could point select and return an sp object as well as select with a polygon.

Still agree with my May 13 comment and will clean up i() so that it just returns the data values. Closing this and opening new issues.
