That's correct. Unfortunately when running on IIS with ASP.NET classic this will not work.
As you correctly pointed out, in that case the Release will need to be set manually.

A dedicated ASP.NET classic integration is planned. There we can, at least have a convenience method to set the release by specifying the entry assembly:

options.ReleaseFromAssembly(assembly);

Or something along those lines.

The automatic assembly version locator is not going to work on ASP.NET Classic with IIS.
