Note: this is partially done already, still there are many global functions which would be better encapsulated as static methods in helper classes (eg http, charset).
Also, if we introduce namespaces, the files might be renamed/moved, f.e. phpxmlrpc/client instead of xmlrpc_client

For compatibility, xlrpc.inc and xmlrpcs.inc will be kept as alternative for people allergic to autoloaders

If you want to go the autoloading/composer/PEAR way you have to spread the classes. So, I'd say; hell yeah! This would also improve readability of the code.

Besides every common new php tool/framework uses autoloaders. But it should be able to use custom or no autoloaders.

Classes have been slpit (php53 branch), and Composer autoloading works fine.
Remains to develop support for the 'built in to the lib' autoloader.
And maybe make composer autoload work both when lib is used standalone (during its development) and when it is included as dependency
