You're absolutely right. The results from Google "8013150a" show that this is a permissions problem. I copied my entire My Documents\Visual Studio 2008\Addins subdirectory to C:...\Application Data\Microsoft\VisualStudio\9.0\Addins, and this seems to have solved the problem.

This problem can be caused by having your my documents folder on a network drive (H:) A common scenario in large organisations and government departments. The problem is not caused by git but is a visual studio problem. I have to move all my projects off the network drive on to a local drive to prevent issues. copy the addins folder to a local drive and then use the vs2008 options=>environment=>addins to add a path to your new addins folder (remember to delete the old git addins cause they will clash) restart your pc and it should now work ok.

If you re-install git make sure you again delete the addins that are re-installed in the wrong place.
