I received some helpful information about this from the golang-nuts mailing list (and the reading they linked to).

Sure enough, OpenGL requires draw calls to be made from the same thread that owns the context. There are some fancy tricks you can use to get it to draw from other threads, but they seem inadvisable at best.

The solution I found (runtime.LockOSThread()) seems to be the correct solution.

I wonder if it would be a good idea to call runtime.LockOSThread() from gl.Init(), instead of most every user having to learn to do this. I guess most people use a goroutine or two and will end up needing this.
