thats because its trying to find the package, and it isnt there. i like the feature idea though

It seems npm also supports raw tarball downloads.
I think ill implement that first, as its much simpler.

I haven't explored too much this topic, I just know that npm can install from git and tarballs as you mentioned. I might be wrong, but I don't think npm read the version from package.json when installing from GitHub. It just uses the branch / tag / commit.

As far as i can understand, npm does this:

- is http* in front of arg?
  - is github url? # i can do this
    - download tarball
  - is normal tarball? # and this
    - download tarball
- is \<protocol\>?
  - tell `git` to download the tarball
- is in registry? # and this
  - normal install
