There are numerous ways to add custom behaviour and controls to GoldenLayout. You can add new controls to the header as described here, extend tabs as described here or use GoldenLayout's DOM like API to interact with your layout programmatically as described here. I'm aware that there are a number of feature-requests to implement a specific behaviour from another layout manager and I completely see why any of them would be useful. The aim of GoldenLayout is to be a powerful layout manager, but also a flexible framework that can be customized and extended to fit any given requirement rather than implement specific features.

@WolframHempel while I totally agree with you that GoldenLayout is flexible enough to provide the framework for all these functionalities, I must add that if the pop-out feature was considered important enough to be included as default then an expand/collapse a.k.a. show/hide feature should be considered as default as well. Or as a temporary workaround at least a working example should be added to the tutorial page.
