FYI, I simply changed
am__api_version='1.14'
to
am__api_version='1.15'
and I was able to successfully run configure and then make. This was on a Linux Mint 18.1 machine.

Same problem here on a Debian 9 Stretch machine (automake version 1:1.15-6).
Changing the value of am__api_version from '1.14' to '1.15' in ./configure helped, thanks to @cconvey for the tip!

I can confirm this error is now fixed (with #57 at cf651b8 ) on Debian 9 Stretch (aclocal version 1.15).
