It looks like your pip is confused. Did you try to run the latest pip:

pip install --upgrade pip

I think old pips do not support epoch based version properly.

Ah, that makes sense - this is with the pip that ships with Ubuntu Trusty. The reported version is 1.5.4, which seems to be quite old. It looks like versions 6.0 or newer is required: https://pip.pypa.io/en/stable/news/

Also do not run pip as root - it will install to the system python which will likely hose your box by breaking the system python. Make a virtual env and run pip from there.
