Thank you, that's all very useful feedback! We'll reply with a pointer to more info shortly.
A few quick comments:

• There are currently some issues with using the app engine plugin locally. It should run fine for the deployed app, but for now you'll want to disable it for local testing.

• re: 8), When you deploy an app to production, only the changed files are uploaded, not all the app's files

• The issue in 2) is temporary-- the zlib extension is not included in the php-cgi bundled with the OSX SDK for the current release. It will be included in the next release (1.8.7). With zlib the updates will work as you expect. As a workaround until the next release, you can install your own local php-cgi, e.g. like this with macports.

  sudo /opt/local/bin/port install php54-cgi php54-APC php54-calendar
  php54-exif php54-gd php54-mysql php54-oauth php54-openssl php54-soap
  php54-xdebug php54-xsl php54-mcrypt php54-mbstring

then run the dev_appserver from the command line like this:

<path_to_sdk>/dev_appserver.py --php_executable_path=<absolute path to php-cgi> . 

If you installed it as above, its path will be: /opt/local/bin/php-cgi54.
