Unable to use custom scalar with this starter

I'm also having the same issue, which is also related to Issue #16 . When using any of the 'Custom scalars' examples provided in Apollo's Graphql Tools docs, the Apollo Server crashes with a

Type "MyCustomScalar" not found in document

error (or similar):

I've been banging my head against this issue for about a week now. Any help would be appreciated.

Some additional notes: I thought the error could possible be caused by either the usage of the static schema.graphql file or augmentedSchema, but testing without them yielded the same error.
