Thank you for this! Actually the one I downloaded is not compatible with ours (We use Canvas, not Blackboard). I have no choice but to update the outdated LockDown Browser exe file that I have and did the powershell command you pasted and it works! Thank you so much again for helping me.

I just downloaded the most recent version from their website — LockDownBrowser-2-0-8-05.exe — and it works fine for me.

On the host machine, you should just double-click on Sandbox.wsb, then click nothing in the virtual machine until the browser fully launches to the sign-in page. If you double-click the "Lockdown Browser" icon on the VM's desktop, then you'd get this error.

On your host machine, what do you get when you run:

winver.exe

My machine shows "21H2 (Build 19044.1645)". If your machine has something different, that could perhaps be the source of this error, but that seems fairly unlikely to me.

My build is this:

What's happening on my end is that when I waited for LockDown Browser to activate, it updates (which I had also waited). After that it shows this:

In which I had no choice but to click and then open the LockDown Browser normally. Which then leads to this:

Sadly this is what the school gave to us (which is 2-0-7-08.exe). Maybe this is what's causing the problem? I can see a website that has Respondus browser download but it's a 'fansite' and I'm wary of downloading from other resources.

OK I fixed it. I just have to get the latest LockDown Browser! I just got it from a university website online (as ours is just an outdated link), Sorry for the trouble and thank you!

Glad to hear the update fixed it.

If for some reason you ever need to manually launch the browser, do not double-click the file on the Desktop. Instead:

  1. Launch PowerShell by right-clicking on the VM's "Start" icon, then select "Windows PowerShell"
  2. Run the following lines:
    cd C:\Users\WDAGUtilityAccount\Desktop\runtime_directory\
    .\withdll.exe /d:GetSystemMetrics-Hook.dll "C:\Program Files (x86)\Respondus\LockDown Browser\LockDownBrowser.exe"

This makes sure that the browser can't detect that it's running in a VM.
