Using subtraction should improve locality, because you don't need to get the size out of the middle subtree, but getting that size wouldn't have forced the rest of the spine.

I'm actually no longer convinced that this was a good idea (on my part)
because the sizes are in the Nodes rather than the Digits. Some
benchmarking should answer the question. What using subtraction does here
is probably help keep caches warm.
