hello.rb test produces invalid Java source.

You found out my dirty secret :) The resulting source does require some massaging, all for minor syntactic twiddles in the Java code like semicolons at end of line. It is the right source, ignoring those tweaks, but it's rather ugly to generate valid Java code.

I am debating just generating Java bytecode, which has no syntactic requirements and would be a more straightforward translation, but I'm open to suggestions.

I'll check on lib/RString.java too.

RString did indeed have some bad code pushed. I've fixed that.

Having played around with it a bit more I think that generating bytecode directly is going to be the better option. Realistically if you stick with emitting Java source then you're still going to have to build some kind of intermediate representation to do it. Given that, why not just go straight to ASM ClassNodes (although there may be some awkwardness with name clashes with the JRuby AST ClassNode)?
