Yep, I can see why this would not work. Sorry about that, I was fixing another bug of default responder ignoring the override block if the object is invalid, and turned out to not pass the block to the responder altogether if the override block is there.
Can you open an issue on rails/rails for me? I'll tackle this bug and make sure that the overridden block got passed to the responder.
