twitter detail: @heckj hi! Bought Using Combine book but ePub is much less readable on iPad/macOS because of the reference markup… :-/
I know nearly nothing about ePub, but it appears that CSS class “xref” isn’t defined in the ePub? That might be part of it anyway. Luck.

After some digging and poking, it appears that I can add some content in the reference links to provide the xreflabel so that the links will be rendered correctly. The generation of the epub is still generating warnings, and I'm not entirely certain if that's my issue or a false warning from the generator. I went ahead and opened an issue with asciidoctor-epub3 repository (asciidoctor/asciidoctor-epub3#210) to see if any further debugging steps were advisable.
It looks like this can be resolved, but may be a tedious/time consuming update to all the reference links in order to make it generated ePub correctly again.
