The documentation is a bit lacking in comparison to the main repo, yes, but that is because it works in exactly the same way. I think your confusion stems from the fact that you’re expecting this to be a feature you enable. It isn’t, it’s simply a different repo with more casks. The readme gives an example on how to use it, so if you could give us an example (or even better, a contribution) on how you feel the documentation could be improved, it would be welcomed.

To use this, after tapping this repo (by running brew tap caskroom/versions in a terminal), you simply install software as you’d do with the main homebrew-cask repo. For example, after you tap this repo, in addition to brew cask install java (which you can use to install the latest java version from the main repo), you can also do brew cask install java6 or brew cask install java7 to install those respective versions from this repo. Most casks from the main repo don’t have a beta or older version here, so you’ll have to search for it in the usual brew cask search way.

Thanks for the fast reply. That is very helpful - I this your reply could go almost verbatim into the README.

So, I was able to use:

% brew cask search virtualbox

Which resulted in:

==> Exact match
virtualbox
==> Partial matches
virtualbox422492790 virtualbox43691406
%

So it looks like I could then use brew cask install virtualbox422492790 to get an older version.

Since the original issue was resolved, and this isn’t a common issue, I’m going to close it. If the issue arises again, we can revisit it.
