I never know what to do with this. Some people see this and then always do -j8
regardless of their machine. But if you put something like -j<n>
then some people might literally type that even if you explain it below.

Yeah, I've had the same frustration with how to frame this. I've tended to err these days on just using the number because at least it removes questions or errors with the latter, even if it's slower than what might be possible on someone's machine.
If you'd like, I could add a number and a note saying that number could literally be any number you want, given the machine capacity.
