The problem was in the indexing code. The behaviour of using urllib to fetch a remote file and recursively fetching entities is perhaps a poorly understood one but it is nevertheless intended.

The real problem was that for some reason the 'null' index type wasn't getting a hit on the entityID (null index is the index using the null transformation of the entityID as opposed to things like the sha1 or md5 index). I fixed that and now the _lookup code gets an index hit on the entityID as intended.

I've added a test for this but please verify that it works before I close the issue.
