I reproduced the issue using a build that is close to 4.3.1.

Have we seen how this behaves in main/4-3-stable/soon-to-be-4.3.1? Just want to make sure it's not already fixed.

okay. interesting.
wondering if it ever worked as expected - or maybe our error stack is doing a better job at getting the message back to the user/client. pretty sure we haven't touched the actual rule language logic.
