Technically a legacy port, but technically also a new feature.

This command was a new feature in OptiBot 2.0, however it was never made public since it was very experimental and incredibly unstable at times.

I believe this could be reintroduced in NX at a later point in time, possibly 3.1. When we reach that point, I'm most likely gonna rewrite this from scratch.

What is/was a usecase for this?

It's stated right in the description.

This is primarily for usage in CTM creation.

I've found that this tool is especially useful for method=repeat CTM. If you're creating a texture large enough, it quickly becomes a huge pain in the ass to split it up into smaller images that OptiFine can use.

In OG OptiBot, I also had another command that performed the exact opposite operation: stitching together many smaller images into one.

And yes, I'm aware that there are online tools that can accomplish similar results, but I haven't found a single one that works well enough that makes things any more convenient than simply cropping each tile yourself by hand. I can already list several issues I've encountered trying to find a tool like this online:

  • Some named each tile something unusable like split_image_0-1.png
  • Some just gave you blurry textures
  • Some would require you to download each tile individually. (Yes, seriously... and the texture I was using for testing would result in well over hundreds of tiles.)
  • Some wouldn't even let you use your own grid size. (I've found many of these tools to specifically be tailored for Instagram of all things)
  • Some editors wouldn't let you define pixel-perfect grid sizes.
  • Many of the editors I tried had several of the above issues all at once.
