I admit that I could be totally wrong about my expectation. That's just what seemed intuitive to me.

Also, I was looking at the spec and I couldn't find any mention of DTSTART being in RRULE, but it looks like they way to set DTSTART of an RRule is to put it in the rfcString?

from rrule.

Hi @coolaj86,

each RRULE has a start (DTSTART, set to the current date, if not provided), and optionally also an end date (UNTIL). These two dates mark the period during which recurrences are searched for (i.e. nothing outside this period exists for the rule).

In your example, the date (d) used as the marker for before/after is going to be slightly bigger than the implicit rule.options.dtstart date. Therefore, rule.before(d) won't return any recurrences.

To make it work it as you expect, it is – like you say – necessary to set dtstart to a date that's smaller than d.

This is how you can set DTSTART:

"FREQ=WEEKLY;DTSTART=20131231T230000Z;INTERVAL=2;WKST=SU;COUNT=4;BYDAY=TU,SU"

from rrule.
