Did you disable updatedb removing '/etc/cron.daily/mlocate'? If not please try that. I found that for some people reducing multireq_max worked but I don't know how performance is impacted. For that in fstab for each s3 mount change the options field:
"_netdev,iam_role=auto,allow_other,umask=0000" to "_netdev,iam_role=auto,allow_other,multireq_max=5,umask=0000"
This ticket s3fs-fuse/s3fs-fuse#152 discusses this problem but the discussion is for Ubuntu - we use Amazon Linux
