How did you launch the Python shell? Did you modify your manage.py to install the import hooks?

Python was launched via python on the command line in the virtualenv, and I hadn't adjusted manage.py.

I see, in that case the import hook isn't loaded which triggers the exception above. If you want to use django-configurations you have to modify your manage.py as described in the documentation. It's unfortunate but currently the only (clean) way to integrate into Django's settings loading process. If you still want to use python (although I can't support that) do this in the python shell before you import the Settings class from configurations:

from configurations import importer
importer.install()

You could easily put this into a Python startup script, see http://docs.python.org/2/using/cmdline.html#envvar-PYTHONSTARTUP for more information.

I'm going to close this for now since this is the intended behavior.
