The metadata of the email contains the number already, no? "X-smssync-address: [phone]"

What email address would you use to associate it with a phone number? Would Gmail accept messages with "From: Billy <1234567890>"? Should the number be converted to a canonical format? Would Gmail be able to thread messages if some are from "[phone]" and some are from "[phone]"?

yes it does, but non tech people usually don't notice this. android already provides you with the canonical number. i'd put it in the local name field. shouldn't affect gmail threading at all.

Yes, I have tried this and it does not work. That is why I have created a new issue. Please help!
