Your plugin should follow the example _plugins/testplugin.rb

module Jekyll
  class TestPlugin < Liquid::Tag
    def render(context)
      "hello jekyll!"
    end
  end
end

Liquid::Template.register_tag('testplugin', Jekyll::TestPlugin)
