The whole contexts and step definitions infrastructure is a simple decoupled extension in Behat 3. It means you can provide your own infrastructure for reading callees from whenever you want. You just need to implement and hooks this interface into an environment manager:

It returns array of callees for provided environment. If you provide this: https://github.com/Behat/Behat/blob/master/src/Behat/Behat/Definition/Call/Given.php, you will have your own step definition working.

Another way - if you want to continue using annotated context classes for these definitions, you just need to dynamically hook them into the suite environment. For that, you just need to listen:

and do something like:

$env = $event->getEnvironment();
if (!$env instanceof UninitializedContextEnvironment) {

@everzet I think I'm still missing something here. I've got a reader, it works just fine for uninitialized (eg, behat -dl, but I'm not figuring out how to actually register the context. This code is never called.

I've been looking into using the Behat\Testwork\Suite\Setup\SuiteSetup interface as well without luck (the setupSuite() method never seems to be called, even in SuiteWithContextsSetup).
