Does the VM have a browser installed and configured? snakeviz uses the Python webbrowser module, which you can read more about here: https://docs.python.org/2/library/webbrowser.html#module-webbrowser.

It's headless, it doesn't have X at all and has no graphical apps. I guess
I could try pointing it a lynx, but what I really want to do is open it in
chrome on my host machine.

I guess someday we can add an option to start snakeviz in server-mode so you can try to access it from another machine. You might be able to hack it now to modify the line that tries to open a webbrowser, then it'd just be the server running.
