That exact configuration is not possible nor supported with grunt right now. You may be better off generating the configuration dynamically based off another task, eg.

grunt.registerTask('gc', function() {
  grunt.config('preprocess').dev = { /* configuration for preprocess:gc:dev */ }
  // etc
});

then run your configuration like so grunt gc preprocess

That's only one example, you could probably come up with something better after reading the grunt API docs

got it, thanks. i'll take a look and see what i can come up with. didn't realize grunt had that limitation.
