In the first case (default, text-only) there is no output because p4.exe hangs. 
 When I 
kill the rogue process the diff appears in the NiftyPerforce Output pane.

Hm, could check for what the P4DIFF env variable says and not assume anything 
in that
case I guess...

So for the first case it looks like it was something on your side that made the
p4.exe to hang? Perhaps check the connection with the perforce server? I just 
tested
here on my local server and it seems to work just fine. Need some more info for 
the
first issue, e.g. perforce server version, perforce client versions etc.

Second issue still in the works. And why don't you have p4win? :) It's the only
reason why one should use perforce...
