@simonh1000 that was added by Ace's HTML mode because the markup is invalid -- you cannot have a <pre> inside <p>. If you change the <p> to <div>, it should go away.

Thanks. But suppose I have a number between 1 and 11, how would I add an x as above to that line?

Ace calls those "annotations". You can manipulate them with EditSession#clearAnnotations, EditSession#setAnnotations, and EditSession#getAnnotations. Also, EditSession#on('annotation', <handler>) fires when the annotations change.

I don't think juicy-ace-editor has a special API for annotations, you'll have to use juicyAceEditor.editor.getSession().setAnnotations([ ... ]) in JavaScript.
