And as often happens, 10 minutes later we figured it out.
To summarize for anyone else who finds this, running in type:module appears to activate strict mode. We were not returning a boolean from our set method, so it was treating it as an error. Returning vm.true from the setter fixed all my issues and even repaired my relationship with my father.
