As of writing, the complete work-in-progress branch may be seen at [branch deleted]. This branch is subject to rewrites and will eventually go away as changes are merged. Due to the size of the changes, I plan to submit them as a series of PR's for easier review. I will update this comment with PR's as they are made.

I am marking this "done", since, although #405 came out of this effort, it only cleans up newly ported code a bit. The actual porting is complete 🎉 as of #402 being merged.
