Just spitballing approaches here: Keeping the main use-case simple is important.

Maybe we could say "You can define your fancy intent-filtered services in p4a, but only with the bootstrap=library_service setting, to produce an aar. You will then need to include library that in your final build. So, you will be running buildozer twice."

That way the main Android Manifest template can be left alone, and only the library_service template needs to be edited, hopefully keeping complexity away from the beginners.

Specifying the intent for each service is going to be tricky. We could:

  • Extend the syntax to of services to name:pathy.py[[:foreground[:sticky]]:intent].
  • Add a new option - a map from service name to intent.
  • Add a new option - a link to an XML file which entirely replaces the services section of the xml. This would be the most flexible, allowing meta-data to be specified too, but it puts the greatest onus on the developer to understand Android manifests.
