I guess most of the functionality of btrfs-heatmap if not all, only works when running as root. Might be worth to add a check if uid == 0 to exit gracefully?

Yes, the search ioctl requires root.

Catching the not permitted error from the ioctl and exiting with a nice message instead of having everything just explode would certainly be a good enhancement.

Error: Insufficient permissions to use the btrfs kernel API: '[Errno 1] Operation not permitted'. Hint: Try running the script as root user.

I also added user friendly messages in some other places (pointing to something that is not a btrfs filesystem, output png cannot be written). Will tag a new version today and release the changes.
