Can you try it with the latest codebase? On OSX it will also use IOKit instead of libusb now.

@echelonh you probably need to execute this command as root on Linux.

@nikias I did run as root... I compiled everything with GCC 5 - does it make any difference?
In any case, I see the device in lsusb, irecovery can read the NONC (which means some communication is possible), but it fails to truly connect and after a few attempts it gives up.
