It should normally allocate no more than 64 kiB in total but that may be just enough to push the stack over the edge, under the right circumstances.

Case conversion, I think you can just write your own function for that. Or you can use a function like toupper which means the same thing.
Without missing case-sensitive comparisons, we can also implement a method of our own
from libuv.
