Kernel already supports feedback over socket error queue. Current j1939acd is not using it.
Here is an example of code actually using this kind of feedback:

I am going to close this -- the other program managed the can interface and when it was stopped it set the interface to listen-only, which was my problem. Is it possible for the can-j1939 module to know the state of the can interface? It could reject this sort of thing outright without the timeouts if that was the case.
