Damn! Okay, I don't know much about Linux Mint Debian Edition, but I think your installation may be corrupt :(
Try updating using mintupgrade then try using Alt and Tab again. Let me know if you need more help ;)

Thanks for the response, but what about my comment would suggest a corrupt installation? The problem is very specific to a particular app.
And what relevance does Alt+Tab (which, as with most distros, just switches window focus) have to this ???
