Could be in other places as well, but using the showDesktop applet raises the used amount of memory, each time.

It says here that this issue was closed 5 months ago. I don't think it is closed yet. In LMDE UP4 I still see Cinnamon taking 250MB memory and 50% of my total CPU (dual core).

Indeed, there's not one but many small memory leaks. I can confirm 1.4 still has some.
