I think it's always more interesting to provide more granularity in terms of recording streams. There are cases where there could be streams that you don't want to record every time and during all the session. Maybe, in a classroom or interview you prefer to start/stop recording of only a subset of streams at any time.

Anyway, we're still deciding on how the recording function should be triggered. We think that it should only be used by "privileged" users with special roles. And keep in mind that you can also use erizofc.js from server side to start/stop the recording of any stream. But we could also consider a server API to also trigger the recording.

We've recently added different roles to Licode's configuration. There are permissions to publish, subscribe and record streams, and you can set up different roles to group permissions in "type" of users. You can find this configuration in licode_config.js once you build the last Licode's version in master branch.
