I think what we need to do here is setup a build pipeline to ensure that the latest release is always on pypi. We'll need to discuss further, but this is definitely something we want to do.

The githubian way to do this is probably with travis-ci.org and https://docs.travis-ci.com/user/deployment/pypi/

I have never worked with pypi or pip, but that would undoubtedly be nice. Can you add it? What does this mean for me in the future?

shomodj avatar shomodj commented on August 15, 2024

I also never worker with pypi, but will take a look at it. It would be nice, because then you can do this:
$ apt-get install python-pip
$ pip install reclass
and path to the libs is nicer then manual install

I don't understand this?
"What does this mean for me in the future?"
I guess if you are the owner of reclass you would need to register on pypi
https://pypi.python.org/pypi
There is a link to register on upper right

here is a tutorial on how to register and upload, I guess if you have setup.py then you just need to register and run upload.

Thanks for the info. Since I don't use pip or pypi myself, I think it would be best if someone else maintained reclass on pypi. I hope you understand.

No problem, I can do it. Will close the ticket once its done.

any progress on this?

iluminite avatar iluminite commented on August 15, 2024

@michaelkrupp, I'll connect with @madduck and ensure we get the latest release available through pip. Thanks for the bump!

I don't have any experience with pypi, but obviously this is a good
idea.

So, are you going to upload/maintain it yourself, or are you still looking for someone else to do it for you?

I would love to work with someone. My time for reclass is almost
nonexistent these days and since I don't use pypi, it's not the most
natural thing for me to maintain.

Hi, I'd love to have reclass available on pypi (for installing using pip).

I've already tried to upload it to testing pypi - https://testpypi.python.org/pypi/reclass
I can upload the package to production pypi as well if @madduck is fine with it.

I'm not a Python specialist but I'll try to make my best.

tomkukral avatar tomkukral commented on August 15, 2024

I agree that build pipeline would be the best options. However latest release is more than 2 years old and thus manual releasing could be sufficient, IMHO.

What about relasing manually now and estabilish build pipeline by the time there will be something new to release?

lottspot avatar lottspot commented on August 15, 2024

Travis does seem like a natural choice, we'll just have to work out the details of the pipeline configuration.

I do agree though that preparing a manual package upload would be sufficient for now, since we really only need the pipeline in place by the next time we prepare a release. Getting reclass on pypi seems like an easy win for us that makes a lot of people's lives a lot easier. I can look into taking care of this in the near future.

@tomkukral you are now officially the blocker since you've registered reclass on testpypi.python.org. Please transfer ownership over to rtzq0 so that I can validate the manifest and close out this bug for you :-)

@Rtzq0 done, you are now the owner of reclass on test pypi

Alright, I've opened a separate issue for travis-ci tracking and discussion since the root cause of this guy is closed out.
