Hi Clinton,

If you are getting that error, it means that the Arduino software isn't communicating through the USB-Serial Cable with the ArduTouch board.

I can program my ArduTouch with the latest Arduino IDE v1.8.13, so it isn't a problem with the latest Arduino software.

To debug, can you please answer these questions?

  • Are you sure you have chosen the correct Port for your USB-Serial Cable (from: Tools --> Port)?
  • Have you chosen the Arduini Uno board (from: Tools --> Board)?
  • You mention having a U-Do-It-Duino board. Have you ever successfully programmed in a sketch into it using your USB-Serial Cable and any version of the Arduino software?
  • Have you ever successfully programmed a new sketch into your ArduTouch board using your USB-Serial Cable and any version of the Arduino software?
  • Do you remember when you and your friend bought your ArduTouch kits? From where did you get them?

It might be easier if we communicate via email. My email: mitch AT CornfieldElectronics DOT com

Best,
Mitch

@clintonthegeek I had to make sure CTS (Clear to Send) on the FTDI side is connected to RTS (Request to Send) on the ArduTouch board (RS-232 RTS, CTS, and RTR). Then I have to hit the Reset button on the ArduTouch around the time the Arduino IDE starts uploading the sketch. It may take a few tries. The blue LED on the ArduTouch flashes during the upload.

Edit: It's worth noting that the programming instructions provided with the Ardutouch use an enhanced FTDI cable that has additional circuitry on it that does the reset operation automatically. So if you don't want to play the timing game with the reset button, although admittedly a fun pastime, get one of the FTDI cables made by @maltman23 !

@clintonthegeek I was mistaken, forget my previous suggestion. With any standard FTDI cable / board you just need to connect DTR on the FTDI side to RTS (pin 6) on the ArduTouch side, along with ground to ground, vcc to vcc, RX to TX and TX to RX of course. With DTR connected properly, the Arduino IDE will automatically reset the ArduTouch at the appropriate time to put it into programming mode and you shouldn't get any timeouts.
