POSIX states that pid_t must be a signed integer no greater than long in width. If long is 64 bits wide on a POSIX system, then I think it would be possible for a PID to be anywhere up to 8589934591, rather than 65535. I don't know what sort of system this would occur on though.

This sounds about right.

Anyway, with

➜  ~ ps -e | grep ps
   1232 ?        00:00:00 cupsd
 251222 pts/4    00:00:00 ps

one can see pid more than 65536, so this assumption needs to be addressed.
