timer-applet still doesnt work in 1.6. we are working on it

For those that end up here looking for the timer applet, there's an ugly workaround for now: there's an application called alarm-clock that may be used to create preset timers as well, although it's quite obstrusive.

Is this the applet that can track how much time you spend on specified tasks? That was a nifty applet I remember from Gnome 2. In Gnome 3, the equivalent is the "Time Tracker" application (but it's not an applet).
