Container height is required for horizontal layout modes that need to calculate the number of rows, or how much space is available for the layout. All the included horizontal Layout modes require container height. However, you could develop your own layout mode that did not require height. For example, the straightDown does not require to know the width of the container. So if you were to makes its horizontal equivalent, it would not require container height.
Isotope provides the hooks for you to develop your own custom layout mode. Try looking over the source to see how I did it.
